Individual Counseling

Dealing with life’s stressors can seem overwhelming. We may throw our hands up and say “I just can’t deal” and allow ourselves to wallow in our distress. Or, we might retreat into old patterns of coping that really aren’t very effective. But it doesn’t have to be so difficult.

In individual counseling with adult clients, our approach is to cut to the core issues and begin building a strategic plan to resolve them. We will spend time understanding and deconstructing the source of your struggles and get to the key issues that are causing you difficulty. They may involve:

  • Constant worry
  • Negative self-concept
  • Low motivation
  • Harsh self-criticism
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Marital dissatisfaction
  • Perfectionism
  • Ineffective parenting
  • Negative thinking patterns
  • Mood swings
  • Absence of meaning in life
  • Self-sabotaging behavior

Once the key issues are identified, our doctors will teach you very specific skills that can be helpful in overcoming these negative patterns. We function as understanding but empowering coaches. We will break down the new strategies in an understandable way. We will give you practice projects so you can work between meetings to apply the skills to your particular issues. The ultimate goal is to develop a comprehensive toolbox of healthy coping strategies that you can carry with you for the rest of your life. Through education, coaching, and practice, these new strategies will become a positive, proactive habit that can help you live a more vital, satisfying, and healthy life.
